How often do dogs need their nails trimmed? Every three to four weeks for most dogs. A good rule: if you can hear clicking on hard floors, they're overdue. Overgrown nails change how a dog stands and can lead to joint discomfort over time.

Grinder or clippers — which is better? Clippers are faster; grinders are safer and smoother. A grinder removes nail gradually, which makes it far harder to hit the quick, and it leaves no sharp edges. Nervous or dark-nailed dogs (where the quick is hard to see) do best with a grinder. Having both means you can clip the bulk and smooth the finish.

My pet is scared of the noise. Look for a low-noise grinder and introduce it gradually: let them hear it running across the room for a few days before it ever touches a paw. Pair every session with a treat or a lick mat.

How do I avoid cutting the quick? Trim small amounts at a time. On light nails the quick is the pink area — stop well before it. On dark nails, grind slowly and stop when you see a grey or black dot appear in the centre of the cut surface.
